I've been meaning to post here more, but mainly haven't because I have been too lazy to set up synchronization with Livejournal. That, and that not very many folks have made the switch. Once the DDoS attack is over I'll likely be handing out invite codes. I can't really blame LJ for being on the receiving end of a DoS, but my gut feeling is this place will be less likely to be disliked by the Russian government.

Although other folks in my life are having problems, I'm not having any I can't deal with. Work is boring but keeps the bills paid. My Summer class is all but over, and I've picked up some tasty nuggets of info in the process.

I also saw this car in front of my office yesterday:

I am playing Call of Cthulhu on Mondays.

This game has entered my life as a welcome, on demand diversion.

There's another post coming about my need for weird shit, but not tonight.

Earlier I mentioned that I've started using Bitcoin. Here's a little bit more info on what I'm doing:

During the day I'm just running bitcoind. It's just sitting around downloading blocks, not doing much.
At 11:25 PM a cron job kills it. Five minutes later another job starts it back up, but it uses the CPU to generate coins. Another program (poclbm) starts give minutes after that, which uses the GPU to generate coins.

This silliness stops at 6:00 AM.

Here's the crontab:

# m h dom mon dow command
0 6 * * * pkill poclbm.py #stop bitcoin mining
0 6 * * * pkill bitcoind
10 6 * * * /home/redacted/bitcoin-0.3.20.2/bin/64/bitcoind --server
25 23 * * * pkill bitcoind
30 23 * * * /home/redacted/bitcoin-0.3.20.2/bin/64/bitcoind --server -gen
35 23 * * * /home/redacted/bitcoin_mine/poclbm.py -o localhost -u un --pass=pw -d 0

I have ordered a better video card that should improve calculation significantly. I'm hoping to take a GPU programming class this fall anyway, so I figure what the hell.

I am also using my "jump box" to generate coins. It is not equipped with a gpu, so I use a program called minerd:

redacted@shub-niggurath:/usr/local/bin$ ./minerd --user un --pass pw --url http://192.168.1.101:8332

This is only about 10% of what I"m getting with my current crusty old video card, and a fraction of what I expect to get from the new one, but if the thing's just sitting there it might as well be put to use.

Except the '75 model, all Volvo 164s came with points ignition. We all know how much points suck, and why, so it's understandable that the owner of any car equipped with them would want to get rid of them.

A while back I picked up an ignition system from a '75 model year car. I also had an MSD box and coil sitting in the garage from an old project.

I decided it would be advantageous to use the MSD over the factory Bosch ignition module. This is because the factory ignition has a dropping resistor, while the MSD does not. The MSD coil is also "hotter" (although the effect of this is debatable).
